How to create a custom mockup?

With the Custom mockup editor you have the possibility to create an endless variety of product mockups. They could be 3D objects or have rounded shapes and corners. The best part is you don’t need to know a single thing about design or any graphic design editor.

All you need to get started designing your mockup is a simple product photo or 3D render. You can either purchase this online, take it yourself using a camera or render it yourself. Next, you are going to add a placeholder (you use the placeholder to mark the printing area where you later upload your design), shape it according to the item and save your creation! Yes, it is that easy!

πŸ’‘ Note: This feature is available for Smartmockups PRO plan subscription.

Universal step-by-step guide

1

Upload your product photo/3D render. To get started, click Custom in the main menu and Create new mockup to upload your product photo or 3D render to the editor.

2

Set placeholders. Add placeholders and edit the mesh with the 3D mesh warp function.

3

Mask unwanted items. With the Eraser tool, you can erase unwanted parts of the placeholder.

Additional feature explanations

3D mesh warp

This feature of the custom mockup editor enables the 3D surface of the placeholder. Simply said, the 3D mesh warp adds more draggable dots to the grid which helps you shape the placeholder into any shape possible.

Multiply blending mode

Using the Multiply blending mode allows you to create a more realistic final mockup. It helps the placeholder become transparent, which later on illuminates all the highlights and shadows that peek through the uploaded design. For example, if you are creating a white item, you always want to have the multiply blending mode on. In fact, Smartmockups can detect the color of the item for you and if the color is white, then the Multiply blending mode will automatically be turned on for you.

Overlay image

With the Overlay image, you can add an image topper layer for better final results. It can be a thumb over the screen, screen glare or anything else placed on top of the item. To add your topper image layer, create the layer in a graphic editor of your choice, save it as .PNG and then upload it to the editor in the overlay image section.
